Fall PE Assessments!!
Each Fall the third, fourth, and fifth graders get to do fitness testing. This measures their different fitness levels, and they will get to be tested again, later in the school year. The goal is to improve on these tests throughout the year! How do students improve?? They practice and work hard all school year...in the gym and at home! Lower elementary students will be assessed on locomotor skills (skip, gallop, etc.). We will be doing these tests during the next few weeks.

2015-2016...Welcome Back!!!
I am excited to welcome all of the students to South Elementary for the start of the new school year! We have a lot to do in the gym and I will be your P.E. teacher this year. Please look over the following information as it will be important to know this year...thank you!

-Chris Van Antwerp ("Mr. V")

P.E. INFORMATION
“QUICK” INFO

South Elementary P.E. Teacher:  Chris Van Antwerp
I am at South Elementary all day, everyday during the school year. If you need to get ahold of me outside of this time, please feel free to contact me at anytime.
South Elementary:  (616) 669-9362, ext. 23401
Personal Cell Phone:  520-907-7753

PE Blog:  Please feel free to check this out for current PE news throughout the school year:

Pre-K and Kindergarten students, please strongly consider velcro or slip on gym shoes for your children. This is a great idea for many First Graders too. If I am constantly having to tie gym shoes, we won’t get very much accomplished in the gym each day. Thank you!! :-)

PE Rules
I can be safe.
I can be responsible.
I can be respectful.
I can give my best effort.

Consequences
  1. Students will receive a warning for inappropriate behavior, with guidance about what is expected and what good behavior and choices should look like.  I will follow Capturing Kids Hearts format.
  2. The students will receive Think Time for about one minute if this behavior must be addressed again.  At this time, they will spend one minute in a designated spot reflecting on their behavior.
  3. Student will return to the PE activity.
  4. If behavior continues, the student will receive Think Time again. I will follow up verbally with the 4 Capturing Kids Hearts think questions, to which they will respond. When this occurs, it can result in participation time being lost from Choice Day. A second visit to Think Time can very possibly result with me contacting the parents.
  5. Student will return to the PE activity.
  6. Last resort, visit to the office.  The teacher will be notified the day of the occurrence, and I will ensure parents are notified, usually with an office behavioral referral (10 additional minutes lost from Choice Day).
NOTE:  Based on the specific negative behavior(s), some of these steps may need to be skipped or modified.

PE Procedures
  • Students will walk in a 4S line to PE, and return to class in the same manner.
  • Students will quietly and under control, enter the gym, find their wall number, and stand at the number.  They will also go to their number throughout the lessons, and also report to line up spots at the conclusion of class.  Your assistance reminding the students of this procedure upon entering the gym is greatly appreciated.
  • Note:  Students will hustle respectfully to their number at all times, always being safe.
  • Students will wear gym shoes at all times on PE days.
  • ATHLETES OF THE DAY: Each class I will choose a star athlete who is following all rules/procedures and is putting forth their best effort. These students will fill out a ticket that stays in the gym. Please take time to congratulate these students! Students will also have opportunities to earn a ticket for good hallway behavior after the class is dismissed from the gym.
  • RESTROOM:  If at all possible, please have your students use the restroom before PE.  With younger students I would prefer the restroom to be used during activity vs instruction time, but I also realize their age.  If you have students that require more frequent trips to the bathroom, please let me know as soon as possible.
  • WATER:  No water bottles allowed in the gym.  It is a safety issue.  Students must get a drink of water before or after PE class.  What we do in the gym is important and it is important that students don’t miss anything.

Positive Reinforcement
  • Class PE Stars
    • Each day classes have a chance to earn five behavior stars.  I will keep track of stars on a chart in the gym.  Once the two rows are filled, the class earns Choice Day.
  • Student Athletes of the Day
    • Each day I will choose one or two Star Athletes that are following all rules/procedures and are putting forth their best effort.  These students will fill out a ticket.  Please take time out to congratulate these students!

If you would like a detailed copy of my procedures for yourself at anytime, please just let me know.

I am looking forward to a GREAT year at South Elementary!
